Global watersports icon and celebrity Laird Hamilton has been confirmed as a Flexifoil rider for the upcoming Virgin Active channel crossing by Sir Richard Branson in celebration of his 60th birthday last month. Laird will support Sir Richard along with Sir Richard’s friends and family and our very own Aaron Hadlow.
For those of you who don’t know Laird’s history (shame on you! ed.) Laird is synonymous with surfing and crossover board sports in general. Since first learning to surf between the ages of two and three (on the front half of the surf board) Laird has shot to fame and respect for all kinds of extreme activities from making epic long distance paddle-board journeys across oceans, to breaking the European speed-sailing speed record of 36 knots aged only 22!
His career has also extended into film from acting as a stunt double in such blockbuster films as Die Another Day and Waterworld to starring in legendary surf films such as Riding Giants. In the music scene Laird is also part of H2O Audio’s board of directors, allowing him to infuse his passions of watersports and music, and he also has his own production company: BamMan Films!
Outside of media, Laird is highly active in charity work having recently completed the Race Across America Crossing, benefitting such charities as Beautiful Son Foundation for Autism, Pipeline for a Cure for Cystic Fibrosis, and Augie’s Quest for Muscular Dystrophy.
The list goes on and on for Laird’s accomplishments in the watersports scene (you can find more details by visiting his website – the link is to the right) but we are just delighted to support Laird in crossing the channel along with Sir Richard and his team.

Congratulations to Christian Winkenjohann who has done Flexifoil proud in Germany, freestyling his way to 6th in the National competition!

In celebration of his 60th Birthday, Sir Richard Branson has today announced that he will be kitesurfing the English channel along with his friends and family with the support of Virgin Active and Flexifoil.
“Kitesurfing is one of my favourite sports. I absolutely love the amazing rush you get when going at high speeds, in high winds, with the most beautiful kite acting as your only guide. I know that kitesurfing across the channel will not be quite the same as kitesurfing in the beautiful waters of the Caribbean but I can’t think of anything I rather do, with my family and friends, to celebrate turning 60!”
